It was fantastic to see Marchants Hardy Plants featured on Gardeners World on the BBC last Friday evening.  Owner, Graham Gough was discussing the beautiful Asteraceae family (daisies to most of us!) with Carol Klein.  No doubt guided to it by Graham, Carol raved about Helenium ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ (left), a fabulous orangey red and yellow flower which keeps on going through the season if deadheaded, fading gradually.  I was over at Marchants myself  just a few weeks ago and Graham recommended I get this particular Helenium (there was a very good article on Heleniums in the August issue of the RHS ‘The Garden’ magazine and I had set out with the intention of getting ‘Moorheim Beauty’ which is popular and well-known).  So it was great to see the ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ being featured on the programme.  I bought three plants and have them amongst my grasses in the naturalistic/prairie border (all plants purchased from Marchants Hardy Plants) where they are flowering well.

Inspiration is the key when one visits Graham for plants.  Graham’s expertise and generosity in giving advice is somuch appreciated and a plant spotted in the nursery can often be seen in its fullest glory with a quick sortie into the gardens at Marchants ( I was ushered into the gardens by Graham to see a vast drift of the ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ – magnificent!)
